Symbolic constructions and structures are built in cities. Symbols make people feel as if they are back home, let them know where they are, enable people to meet up with others, or those symbols can be used as souvenir pictures — all of those, in turn, become a part of their attachment to the city. There are buildings like that in Tama New Town. This architecture, which catches the eye as soon as you get out of the station, is in this location by design. A symbol of the newly developed town, it is truly the Parthenon. It is a masterpiece of 1980s postmodernism that tells us what is iconic is not functional beauty.

都市には、シンボルとなるような建物や構造物が建っている。シンボルがあると、帰ってきたなと思えたり、自分のいる場所がわかったり、待ち合わせができたり、お土産の絵になったり、それが街への愛着となっている。
多摩ニュータウンにおいてもそんな建物がある。駅を降りるとすぐに目に飛び込んでくるこの建築は、意図されてこの場所にある。新たに開発された街のシンボル、まさにパルテノン。機能美ではないことを語ってくれる1980年代のポストモダンの名作である。
